Benjamin Machin directs an architecture studio in London, working across the United Kingdom and occasionally abroad. The studio finds beauty everywhere and makes non-original, generous buildings.
The studio is an RIBA Chartered Practice and is small by design, with Benjamin leading the design and management of each project. Alongside directing the studio, Benjamin teaches, writes and contributes to architectural education, currently leading a design studio at Loughborough University.
The studio works with private clients, developers, charities and institutions. Most projects involve homes, housing and the adaptation of existing buildings, although the practice is equally interested in small public and community buildings. Across all project types, we are drawn to work where early architectural thinking matters and where there is a distinct relationship between building and place.
Design starts by looking carefully at what is already there: the street, the ground, traces of use. These ordinary things carry meaning, and we take them seriously. We seek out what excites – buildings, objects or stories that can make this ordinariness feel newly alive.
Benjamin has been selected for inclusion in New Architects 5, due for publication by the Architecture Foundation in summer 2026.
